ICELAND: Travel Tips
TOP THREE TIPS
WHAT SURPRISED US
Prices! Food, gas, hotels are all on the expensive end. We saved a lot of money by camping rather than staying in hotels. Highly recommend!
Almost everyone speaks English! Icelandic is very tricky - we tried to pick up a few words (hello, thank you), but they knew immediately. Everyone was very friendly and happy to help!
WHAT TO PACK
Eye mask. If visiting during the summer, expect daylight 24 hours a day. This eye mask should help get some beauty sleep still!
Rain pants and jacket. Even if it wasn’t raining, we often put both on to protect against the spray of the waterfalls and keep ourselves warm. Highly recommend these iCreek rain pants, affordable and comfy!
Daypack. This G4Free backpack was the perfect size for our extra layers, snacks, and water bottle.
Water bottle. Iceland has the freshest water so save those plastic bottles and fill up from taps as you go! This Hydroflask was the perfect packable size and kept our water cold all day!
Waterproof phone pouch. This Hiearcool Waterproof Phone Pouch is perfect for the spray of all the waterfalls!
Adapter. Iceland uses a Type C or Type F plug. This one comes in a set of 11 different adapters, including C and F.
Portable charger. This one comes in fun colors, is affordable, has built in cords, and wasn’t too bulky. Perfect for taking around with us during the day.
Lots of layers! Even in the summer, we spent most of the trip in pants, alternating between shedding our down jacket and bundling up. And pack your swimsuit for dips in the many hot springs around Iceland!
This Outdoor Ventures puffer jacket was perfect to bring along - compact to pack and cozy against the wind!
Necessities for camp showers: shower shoes (just like college), shampoo, conditioner, towel (unless included in your van rental).
Additional camping supplies: sleeping bag and pillow (unless included in your van rental), extra trash bags and rubber bands, spices
Bug spray (and sunscreen!). Ranger Ready Repellents Picaridin Insect Repellent Spray is TSA compliant, and worked great when the wind died down.
WHAT TO REMEMBER
If visiting in the summer, you can experience up to 24 hours of daylight. We loved the opportunity this gave us to keep exploring, even after the crowds had gone home!
If visiting in the winter, expect very short daylight hours. But you may catch the Northern Lights this time of year!
Stay well within the speed limit as speed is monitored by camera. We heard horror stories of people surprised with speeding tickets at the end of their visit.
The drinking water in Iceland is completely safe - bring your reusable water bottle and refill from taps along the way!
Have fun!! The people in Iceland are so friendly and excited that you’re excited to be in their country. Soak in the spectacular views and make some great memories. And say hi to the puffins for us!
