BRAZIL: Iguazu Falls

Foz do Iguaçu (Iguazu Falls)

Booming falls, three countries, and a bird sanctuary!

WHAT WE DID: Foz do Iguaçu (Iguazu Falls)

Visited Paraguay!

  • We booked a tour guide through MMC Tourismo - so happy we did! Jefferson was a fantastic guide. He was surprised by our interest in going to Paraguay - but it was so close, how could we not? With his help, we had seamless border crossings and learned much more about the country than if we had gone on our own.

  • Ciudad del Este. A shopping city just over the border. We didn’t stop to shop but many people were walking over the bridge for some shopping.

  • Monday Falls. So spectacular (although I recommend seeing it before you see Iguazu Falls…) - and we had it to ourselves.

Bird Park!

  • A sanctuary with 150 species of birds. We wandered through the park, marveling at macaws, toucans, and parakeets flitting around us.

Foz do Iguaçu (Iguazu Falls)

  • See both the Argentine and Brazilian side of the falls! We booked a tour with Douglas through Viator- so thankful for his knowledge and making the border crossing easy.

    • Argentine side

      • After pickup on the Brazilian side, we crossed into Argentina to start on that side of the falls. We spent more time here since the park is so large. There is an option for a train to bring you to Devil’s Throat but we opted for a nice walk along the river since it hadn’t gotten too hot yet. The falls were endless - in all directions was another waterfall or cloud of mist coming from the rushing water. We welcomed the mist in the nearly 100 degree heat. We also walked on the jungle trails (built like boardwalks) to various viewpoints, all with another waterfall peeking out and joining the view. Grab some empanadas to snack on - and look out for monkeys!

    • Brazilian side

      • Although the Argentine side was amazing, I may have liked this side better. We were lucky with a quick border crossing and a calmer time at the park. It was amazing to see from another angle with a more expansive view. Once again we were in awe of how everywhere we looked, there was another part of the waterfall showering us with a cooling mist.

    • Notes:

      • We brought rain jackets but never wore them because the mist felt so nice in the heat.

      • We elected not to do the boat tour so we could spend more time on the trails and viewpoints - but people love it so it’s on our list for the next visit!

WHAT WE ATE: Foz do Iguaçu (Iguazu Falls)

  • Mbeju: Paraguayan cheese flatbread

    • While at Monday Falls, we channeled the calm demeanor of the Paraguayan people we’d met, we enjoyed a beer and mbeju with a view of the falls.

  • Bona Trattoria - a cozy Italian restaurant across the street from our hotel. Don’t miss out on the burrata and fresh bread!

  • Capitao Bar - a lively bar with cheap eats!

WHERE WE STAYED: Foz do Iguaçu (Iguazu Falls)

  • ibis Foz do Iguaçu on Brazilian side

    • Would stay here again!
