Nazaré
WHAT WE DID: Nazaré
Nazaré is Portugal's famous surf town, known for the enormous waves. We heard how beautiful it was so we had to visit on our way to wine country.
To get to Nazare, we took a 2 hour bus ride from Lisbon. The bus was very clean and an easy way to travel! We learned the hard way that our tickets came with assigned seats, just like an airplane.
Visit the beach and walk around the quaint town - while too cold to swim or sunbathe, the water was beautiful.
From the main town, walk up the (steep but gorgeous) path to the Sitio district.
There is also a funicular to get up the hill but it was closed.
We loved the walk - we stopped to take lots of pictures of the amazing views of the ocean and to play on the Baloiço da Ladeira swing.
Once at the top, visit Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo and check out the surfing museum inside. This overlooks the spot where 100 foot waves were once surfed! We were hoping to see some of these huge waves - but of course today was the most beautiful weather we had all trip. We embraced it and sat on the hillside to watch the ocean!
WHAT WE ATE: Nazaré
Le petit chef belge - this food truck is among others near Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo. Pickup a burger and take it for a picnic with a view!
Mar Bravo - amazing seafood close to the waterfront.
WHERE WE STAYED: Nazaré
Simple, affordable, and close to the center of Nazaré, as well as the beach! Would stay here again.
