PORTUGAL: Travel Tips
TOP THREE TIPS
WHAT SURPRISED US
Affordability! Food, tours, hotels were all very affordable.
Walkability. Everywhere we went was extremely walkable! We took a Bolt or Uber if it was very late or a long distance. But otherwise, walking and public transit were our best friends.
Almost everyone speaks English! We picked up a few words in Portuguese (hello, thank you), but they knew immediately. Everyone was very friendly and happy to help!
WHAT TO PACK
Purse with cross-body strap (to protect from pickpockets). I carried this Sherpani Skye around our whole trip - it comes in a variety of sizes and was very comfortable to wear.
Comfortable walking shoes. Portugal has many hills and cobblestone streets, making comfortable shoes essential.
These Ecco sneakers were comfortable all day, no matter how many hills were climbed or steps we took.
Adapter. Portugal uses a Type C or Type F plug. This one comes in a set of 11 different adapters, including Type C and Type F.
Portable charger. This one comes in fun colors, is affordable, has built in cords, and wasn’t too bulky. Perfect for taking around with us during the day.
Lots of layers! We visited in January and were happy to have a variety of long sleeves, pants, and t-shirts. I also brought a vest for additional warmth. Definitely bring your rain jacket!
WHAT TO REMEMBER
Although we felt very safe walking around Portugal (even at night), be aware of your surroundings and of any opportunities for a pickpocket.
The drinking water in Portugal is safe to drink - bring your reusable water bottle! If the taste bothers you, grocery stores and convenience stores have water bottles for sale all across the city.
It’s very easy to get around Portugal. Use the great bus and train system to get between cities. Within the city, use public transit or download the Uber and Bolt ride apps to get inexpensive rides wherever you need to go.
Have fun!! The people in Portugal are so friendly and excited that you’re excited to be in their country. Enjoy all the amazing food and wine that you can!
